When Research Meets the Headlines

Every outbreak makes the news. Few stories explain the science behind it.

Hantavirus, Ebola, arboviruses … Within hours, media coverage floods in, often fragmented, sometimes alarmist, rarely grounded in the full complexity that One Health researchers know all too well.

Designed for the 1H-EID community, this sub-section decodes each media-covered topic through a scientific lens, drawing on research findings and peer-reviewed literature, field epidemiology, and the One Health framework that connects human, animal, and environmental health.

When a pathogen trends, we ask the right questions: What does the evidence actually show? What are the ecological drivers? Where are the knowledge gaps? What do surveillance data tell us, and what don’t they? The goal is not to counter the media, but to complement it, equipping the 1H-EID community with the scientific grounding to interpret, contextualize, and act on emerging infectious disease news with rigor and confidence.

Because in global health, understanding the story behind the story can make all the difference.
